When we are going through a difficult time, it’s important to remember that the pain, discomfort, or difficulty we are experiencing is not who we are. We may feel it so strongly at times that we can’t even imagine anything else, but even so, that is not the truth of who we are.
Take a moment in the midst of whatever is going on, be it joy or suffering, and simply become aware of your breath. How am I breathing? Am I breathing deeply from my lower abdomen, or am I breathing shallowly from the chest? Am I breathing fast or slow? Focus only on the breath and notice your state of being.
From there, take a few moments to breath with intention. Begin to breath abdominally, taking fuller, deeper respirations. Slow the breathing down. Can you count to 5 slowly as you inhale? Can you count to 5 slowly as you exhale? Play with the breath, inhaling and counting to your comfort level, pausing for just a moment before you exhale, then exhaling and counting to your comfort level, and again pausing for just a moment before you inhale again. Do this for at least 3 breaths, and continue as long as you like. This is a form of meditation.
Now take notice of your state of being once again.
However you feel is okay. You may feel deeper joy, greater peace, a sense of calm and love. Or you may have become aware of where you are holding tension or pain.
Get to know yourself this way. Become aware.
Feeling sad or angry is not “bad” in and of itself. It is a part of the human experience, as is happiness and excitement. The important thing is that we do not become lost in our emotions and sensations. Yes, experience them fully and with awareness, and then let them go, allowing room for new or different experiences to come.
You may be wondering how to let go of your emotions when you feel so stuck in them. Just breathe. Then breathe again. Everytime you feel distracted by your feelings and experiences, re-focus on the breath, being fully with the inhale, fully with the exhale. Take it one moment at a time. The rest will work itself out.
